Youssef Moukoko, the young forward from France who recently moved to Borussia Dortmund, has suffered a serious injury that will likely keep him out of action for several months.
The 18-year-old was playing against Bayern Munich in the German Cup when he collided with a defender and suffered an ankle ligament tear. He underwent surgery after the game and is currently in a rehabilitation period at home.
The news comes as a major blow to Dortmund, which had high hopes for Moukoko after signing him from Monaco last summer for a reported fee of £67 million. The French striker has already scored three goals this season, including one hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt in August.
Dortmund coach Lucien Favre said in a statement: "We're all very disappointed for Youssef, but we know how important his future is for us. We'll support him during this difficult time and hope for the best."
Moukoko's injury could also have implications for the rest of the Bundesliga season, where Dortmund faces tough competition from Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Hertha Berlin. It remains to be seen whether he can recover in time to play any part in the second half of the campaign.
In the meantime, Dortmund fans will no doubt be hoping for a speedy recovery for their star player, while supporters of other teams will be keeping an eye on the situation to see if they can take advantage of any opportunities to sign him in the transfer market next year.
